Cartography Unit

The role of the Cartography Unit is to provide mapping and cartographic services for use in census and other surveys.

Key Functions

To institute a comprehensive mapping program, aimed at the complete coverage of the total land area within the international boundaries of Guyana, by means of reconnaissance and field surveys.

Conversion of field surveys into accurate village and enumeration district (ED) maps of the entire country.

Creation of an electronic database of all maps compiled by the unit, using computer software such as ArcGIS and Mapinfo.

Maintain an archive of all maps and cartographical material for reference.

Visit and update existing mapped areas in tandem with geographical and demographical changes.

Training of personnel in mapping and cartographical procedures and provide logistical support to other departments engaged in surveys.

Advise on and planning hinterland travel.
